Kareri lake is best known for being a trekking destination in the Dhauladhars range of the Himalayas in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The lake remains frozen from early December to till March. There is a Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Shakti on a hilltop. Kareri Lake, also known as Kumarwah Lake, is situated 2934 meters above sea level. You can see a herd of sheep and goats with local shepherds in the lovely meadow around the lake. This trek is also a favorite among shutterbugs and natural lovers who can spend some time closer to natural while clicking their best shots. Trek through the lush green forest filled with Chir and chilgoza pines as you continue the trek.
Best Time for Kareri Lake trek
Kareri Lake Trek is a year-round destination. However, the best times to visit are April–June and September–November. During these two windows, you will find pleasant weather and conditions that are perfect for sightseeing. Avoid during the monsoon season because during this season landslides happen in most of the areas due to heavy rainfall. During the summer, Days are warm and sunny (12 to 20°C) while night time temperatures could be (-2 to 6 °C). During September and October, trekkers can experience good weather, with little snowfall. With the onset of October, the day temperature is hovering around 12-18 °C but the evening starts getting comparatively colder with (- 6) to 4 °C.
How to Reach Dharamshala | Kareri lake from delhi
The trek starts from Kareri village. To reach there one should reach Dharamshala first and later Kareri village.
There is no airport or railway station in Dharamshala. One can choose any one of the below options:
By Flight
The nearest airport is Gaggal Airport, situated near Kangra and approximately 15km away from Dharmshala. Air India and Spice jet operate regularly from Delhi.
By Bus
There are many Volvos bus options government and private operators from Delhi (Kashmiri gate or Majnu ka Tilla) to Dharamshala. It takes around 10-12 hrs. to reach the destination.
By Train
Travelers can cover the distance from Delhi to Kangra by train and then take a bus or car to reach Dharamshala. One can also board a train from Delhi to Pathankot Railway Station, which is the nearest broad-gauge station from Dharamshala. It takes about two and a half hours via car to cover Pathankot to Dharamshala distance.
Detailed Itinerary for Kareri Lake Trek
Some Tour and Traveler suggest you 2N/3D package, but I had chosen for 1N and 2D package (for summer but it might be difficult in winters) as trek is easy to moderate and beginner can easily complete the trek in the suggested timelines.
Day 0
I had booked bus tickets from Zing bus app, one week before our confirmed dates. We all reached Zingbus lounge in Majnu ka Tila (Delhi) and waited for the bus. After arriving bus at lounge, we all settled as per our booked seats.
Day 1
We reached Dharamshala the next day around 8:00 a.m. On reaching our hotel, we took some rest and had breakfast. Later, we decided to explore Dharmshala, as it was my first time. So, we have explored the locations below.

Day 2
On Day 2, after having breakfast, we started our journey from our hotel to Kareri village. The road conditions are good and have spectacular views. After reaching there, you will start your trek from Kareri village to Lioti (8038 feet) Duration: 5–6 hours. The Kareri Lake Trek first passes through level grounds but then comes onto a steep ascent, in which you will be trekking alongside the Kareri Nullah Stream. Overnight stay at Lioti for camp tent and dinner. Relax for the next-day journey.
Day 3
We woke early in the morning. After breakfast, we started our trek and reached Kareri lake. The view was so amazing that I can’t describe it in words. After spending some time there, we went to the Shiva and Shakti temple, which was on the hilltop. We clicked a few pictures to keep them as our memories. After spending an hour, we started our journey back to Kareri village. It took us around 4–5 hours to complete. Our driver was waiting at the end point. We all boarded the cab and started our journey to the Dharmshala bus stand.
Day 4
After the overnight journey we reached Delhi around 6:00 AM in the morning. Finally, we reached our home and completed this trek with many memories.

Important things to remember for kareri lake trek
If you are opting for the 2 Days/1Night Kareri Lake Trek package, you should be fit enough to walk throughout the day, otherwise, you can choose the 3 Days/2 Nights package which includes an additional overnight stay at Reoti, on the way to Kareri Lake.
In winters, we may shift the night stay to Reoti (Midpoint) or further below in case the trail gets blocked due to heavy snowfall during the trek.
There is no shortage of water throughout the Trek so keep yourself hydrated by drinking lots and lots of water from the natural water stream.
We may cancel your trek without any notice if the climatic conditions are unfavorable. In such a case you can either choose the next subsequent date or an alternate trek suggested by the guide. However, there will be no refund.
Only dry-pit toilets are available at Kareri Lake or Reoti.
No refund will be provided if you are late. In that case, we may have to shift the camping location or postpone the trek to the next day with added cost.
Carry a first-aid kit and medical supplies according to your needs.
